Vernon Shuler

HOLLY HILL - James Vernon Shuler, 86, of the Providence Community near Holly Hill, died Thursday, June 19, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry Martin and Rev. Zach Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A life-long resident of the Providence Community, Mr. Shuler was a son of the late John Ebbie Shuler and Kathleen Whetsell Shuler. He was valedictorian of his class at Providence High School. He was an Army veteran, a retired US Postal Service rural letter carrier, and a retired farmer. Mr. Shuler was a life-long member of the Providence United Methodist Church where he was a former Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Teacher; and a member, treasurer, and secretary, of the Administrative Board. He was past-president of his District Rural letter carriers association, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Shuler. Surviving are his wife, Claudia Hunter Shuler of Providence; daughters, Kathy (John) Kennerly of Lexington, and Beth (Adam) Wilcox of Portland, Ore.; a granddaughter, Kathleen Kennerly of Mt. Pleasant; and a sister, Dorothy S. Dantzler of Holly Hill. The family would like to thank Mr. Shuler's caregivers, Joanne Howell and Levern Lemon, and United Hospice Staff, especially Angelina Brunson, Martha Price, and Shonequa Green for their care and support. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Avinger Funeral Home and other times at the home.
