HOLLY HILL - Richard Henderson Cummings, Sr., "Dick", 91, of Holly Hill, died on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at The Hospice House of Charleston. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Avinger Funeral Home Chapel with The Reverend Cooper Stonestreet officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the four grandsons. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 7, 2012 at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Mr. Cummings was born on May 23, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Clara Moffitt Cummings and Harold Henderson Cummings. He is survived by his loving wife, Daisy Rhode Cummings, of the home. They were married for 68 years. He was a member of the Holly Hill United Methodist Church. He joined the United States Air Force in 1940 and was a gun turret trainer. He is a World War II Veteran. After the war, he worked as a service advisor for two different Buick dealerships in the surrounding Philadelphia areas. Mr. and Mrs. Cummings moved to Holly Hill in 1959 where he was the co-founder of Santee Block Company until his retirement in 1991. Survivors include three sons: William Samuel "Billy" (Gayle Berry) Cummings of Holly Hill, Richard Henderson "Rick" (wife, Cynthia) Cummings, Jr. of Holly Hill, and Steven Rhode (wife, Rebecca) Cummings of Birmingham, Alabama. Four grandsons: Richard III and Rhett Cummings of Holly Hill and Blake and Grant Cummings of Birmingham. He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Beth, and by two cousins Bill Doris Broomall of Cape May, New Jersey. He loved NASCAR and watching all sporting events. "Dad Dad" as he was known to his grandchildren shared his love of trains, cars, trucks, and Walt Disney World. He will be greatly missed by his family.
