Mona N. Avinger

VANCE - Mona N. Avinger, 88, of Vance, died Saturday afternoon at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She had resided for the past year at Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg. For the most of her life she has lived in the Vance Community where she was well known and loved. She was an artist and taught many people to paint. She was active in the Providence and Holly Hill Communities. She loved flowers and gardening, cooking, and crafts of all kinds. She will be remembered for excellent recipes, especially her home-made yeast rolls, desserts, and peanut brittle. She had a generous, kind, and loving spirit and was always willing to help others. She loved dogs and cats for they were always around. She was a member of the SC Master Farm Homemakers Guild. Mona was born March 13, 1925 in Adams Run. She was a daughter of the late Matthew Newton and Sarah Chaplin Newton. She grew up in Mt. Pleasant and attended Moultrie High School. Mona married Ira D. Avinger, Sr. and moved to reside the rest of her life in Vance. She was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira; her identical twin-sister, Merle McGuire; brother, Christopher Newton; sister, Rosalie Duncan; and a grandson, John Bates. Surviving are three children, Irene A. Seadale (Vincent) of Orangeburg, Linda A. West (Ron) of Canada, and Dee Avinger (Betty) of Bowman; a sister, Joyce Heeke (Bob) of Florida; five grandchildren, Brian Mullinax (Zuhad), Dean Mullinax (Mary Ann), Traci McIntyre (Paul), Katie Palmer (Jason), and Matthew Avinger; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan McIntyre, Rachael Mullinax, Joshua Mullinax, and Delmy Mullinax; and a special cousin, Lynn Teague (George); and there are also many nieces and nephews she left behind that she treasured . Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry C. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Avinger Family Cemetery, Santee. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Avinger Funeral Home.
