Mildred Elizabeth Shuler

April 17, 1932 — November 6, 2019

Holly Hill- Mildred Elizabeth Shuler, 87, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning and joined her mother, father, and siblings in heaven. She was the daughter of the late Furman Edward Shuler and Hazel Moorer Shuler.

Funeral Services will be held at Providence United Methodist Church, Friday, November 8, 2019 at 11 am with Reverend Dave Copeland and Reverend Justin Ritter officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be nephews, James B. Griffin, Jr., James Kevin Griffin, Mark Ott, David Ott, Allen C. Ott, and Brandon E. Cheek.

The family will receive friends at the home of Carroll and Sharon Cheek in Providence prior to Friday.

Miss Shuler was a lifelong member of Providence United Methodist Church. She never married and never birthed any children of her own but helped to raise many, many, many children in the Providence Community, as she was the Nursery Director for countless years at Providence United Methodist Church. She was proud to wear her perfect attendance pins on her Sunday best each week as she was a faithful member of her church and missed very few Sundays in church until her health began to decline in her later years. She lived at her parents’ home all her life working on the family farm and cared for her parents and brother during their declining health. She was a self-taught taxidermist, an avid gardener, and lover of all animals. Throughout her life she raised and loved many different animals as pets, a few of which were a pet pig, a Shetland pony, a flock of geese she affectionately referred to as “the fellas,” and many, many cats and dogs. Miss Shuler worked in the family garden until her late seventies and could make anything grow. She not only had a “green thumb,” but two green hands. Growing and enjoying beautiful flowers and plants may have been her most ardent pass time. She could name most any flower that you could show her or describe. Miss Shuler lived her final five years and ten months at the Magnolias of Santee. She was loved by all as she touched the lives of many in the community young and old.

Miss Shuler is survived by nieces, Sharon Griffin Cheek (Carroll), Brenda Griffin Ballard (Bobby), Miriam Ann Spires (Brian), nephews, James Boyce Griffin, Jr. (Lou), Allen C. Ott (Sandie), David Ott (Sherry), Mark Ott (Wendy), and numerous grand nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her three siblings, Grace Shuler Griffin, Furman Edward Shuler, Jr. and Miriam Shuler Ott Smoak.

The family wishes to thank everyone at the Magnolias of Santee and Edisto Home Care and Hospice for the love and care they extended to our aunt during her time there. Memorials may be made to Providence United Methodist Church or Edisto Home Care and Hospice.
