Mattie Beatty

HOLLY HILL - Mattie Mae Smith Beatty, 92, of Holly Hill, died Tuesday, February 7. The funeral will be Saturday, February 11 at 11:00, at Corinth Baptist Church in Vance, SC, with Rev. Dan Johnson officiating. There will be a visitation at 10:00 prior to the service in the fellowship hall. Mattie was born June 11, 1924, in Eutawville, SC, a daughter of the late John Morrison Smith and Bower Russell Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Lewis Beatty; daughter, Gloria Beatty Smith; brothers, J.C. Smith, Clyde Smith, Claude Smith, and Billie Smith; and sisters, Bower Smith Gibson and Vergie Smith Fenn. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Nathan) Pritcher; son, Gerald (Sybil) Beatty; son-in-law, Jimmy (Margaret) Smith; sister, Dorothy Smith Bethune; grandchildren, Jeffery Nathan Pritcher, Karen (Lindsay) Webb, Rebecca (Michael) Murray, Erin Beatty, Jim (Stephanie) Beatty, and Megan (Jeremy) Harrison; 10 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson. Mattie spent most of her life in Eutawville. She met her husband there when he came to the area to work on the Santee Dam project, and forever after referred to him as her 'dam man.' For several years in the 1970's, she and her husband lived in Orangeburg and managed the Greystone Home, part of the Orangeburg Attention Homes system. She had many fond memories of the young ladies that passed through her care. Mattie will be affectionately remembered for her love of practical jokes, her ability to make the best ambrosia and peanut brittle, her tendency to carry around a tissue (always at least one in her hand and several in each pocket), her obsessive love of beautiful shoes, and her joy at keeping her weekly appointment at the beauty parlor.
