John Frank Ostendorf, 79, of Holly Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Born on April 25, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio, John was the son of the late Clara Hammond Ostendorf and John Ostendorf.
John proudly served his country for 27 years in the United States Air Force, retiring with the distinguished rank of Senior Master Sergeant (E-8). His rank was earned through decades of discipline, leadership, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. The Air Force was more than a career—it was a calling that shaped his character and guided his values. He believed in structure, responsibility, integrity, and taking care of those under his leadership. These principles were not left at the base; he carried them into his home and family life every day.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Rebecca Ostendorf, Becky Gerber, and Carroll Ann Frye; and his grandson Travis Michael-Lance Fuller.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Cleva Jane Ostendorf, with whom he shared a devoted and enduring marriage. Throughout his Air Force career and the many seasons of their life together, she remained his steady partner and constant support. Together, they built a life grounded in loyalty, patience, and mutual respect.
He was a proud father to Synthia Darlene Ostendorf and John Paul Ostendorf, leading by example rather than words and teaching the importance of hard work, keeping one’s word, and standing strong through life’s challenges.
He was a cherished grandfather to Megan Darlene Quick; John Thomas Ostendorf, and his spouse Ashlee Ostendorf; Madison Leigh Ostendorf and her fiancé Justin Taylor; and Connor Wayne Ostendorf and his spouse Andrea Ostendorf. John was also a loving great-grandfather to Nevaeh Denise Fuller; Carter Lee Ostendorf; Elsie Margaret Taylor; Hazel Irene Taylor; and Henry Scott Taylor, expected in March 2026.
He is also survived by his siblings Marc Ostendorf and Illene Gundelfinger, along with many extended family members, friends, and fellow service members. John loved his family deeply and expressed that love through steadiness, dependability, and quiet strength.
Even after retirement, his sense of duty never faded. He faced life—including its struggles—with resilience and determination, meeting each challenge head-on.
What will be missed most is his presence—the reassurance that came simply from knowing he was there. Though his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, his legacy lives on through the family he loved, the airmen he led, and the values he passed down.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Avinger Funeral Home, 2274 Eutaw Road. Military honors will be rendered promptly at 2:00 p.m.
Today, we do not just say goodbye—we say thank you.
Thank you for your service.
