JoAnn Shafer Jamann- Riley was born on November 7, 1932 to Joseph and Enna Mae Shafer in DuBois, Pennsylvania. She graduated from DuBois High School and went on to further her education. She received a nursing diploma from Robert Packer Hospital in 1953; a Batchelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962, a Master of Science in Nursing in 1965, also from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Education degree from Lehigh University in 1974. While studying for her Doctorate she served as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. She then served as an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1973-1976. From 1976-1981 she was Associate Dean, Assistant Vice President and Professor at Rush University Medical Center. She then became Dean of the Nursing School at Columbia University. She retired as Dean in 1985 but continued as a Professor until 1989. As a noted American nursing educator, she was the recipient of the “Futuristic Award” from the University of Portland for whom she was a consultant (1976-1979). She was also a member of the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau and Pi Lambda Theta. She is listed as a noteworthy nursing educator by Marquis Who’s Who.
In 1990 she and her husband, Dr. John Riley, moved to Santee, South Carolina. In their retirement they both became involved in community outreach. She and Jack were active members of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Eutawville. They also enjoyed traveling and going on cruises to interesting places. She was a very generous and loving person and will be missed by many.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James D. Shafer, her husband, Jack Riley and her half-brother, Robert Shafer. She is survived by her nieces, Susy Shafer and Cindy Shafer Law and her half siblings, Pamela Shafer and Richard Shafer. JoAnn was looked after in her last years by many of her dear friends.
The service will be held Monday, June 10, 2024 at 11AM at The Historic Church of the Epiphany, 12065 Old Number Six Hwy, Eutawville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
