Listen to Obituary

James “Jimmy” Chance, 82, of Harleyville, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2026.

Born on November 8, 1943, in Cross, South Carolina, Jimmy was the son of the late Virginia Jackson and Harvey Chance. He was raised by his grandmother Ida Chance, grandfather Luke Chance, uncle Bill Chance, and aunt Evelyn Chance with their four daughters, who were like sisters to Jimmy.

Jimmy enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1961, served in the Vietnam War, and returned from service in October 1965. While serving, he received numerous medals and badges, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Following his military service, Jimmy spent his 38-year career with Westvaco in North Charleston, where he retired in 2003 as a foreman.

Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and foxhunting field trials. He had a passion for professional wrestling, NASCAR racing, Chevy trucks (owning more than 10 in his lifetime), country music, and outdoor cooking. Jimmy especially cherished spending time with Jackie, his beloved wife of 61 years. Those who knew Jimmy would describe him as opinionated, stubborn, always on time, and willing to lend a helping hand.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Jacquelynn “Jackie” Chance; his daughters, Loretta Gaskins (Johnny) and Connie Getman; his grandchildren, Andrew Gaskins, Anna Gaskins, Joseph Gaskins, Steven Gaskins, Lori Gaskins, and Jessica Seymour; ten great-grandchildren; and his brother and sisters, Sam Chance, Annette Bolt, Gail Reed, and Sharon Dupree.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. at Avinger Funeral Home, 2274 Eutaw Rd., Holly Hill. A graveside service will follow at Harleyville Cemetery, S. Railroad Ave, Harleyville.
