HOLLY HILL - George Virgil Hughes, 80, of Holly Hill, husband of Emma Flake Hughes, died Monday, May 7, 2012 at MUSC hospital in Charleston. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Holly Hill with Rev. Todd Hodge, Rev. Venning Long and Rev. Buddy Ackerman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Hughes was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Eddie Arthur Hughes and Rachael Ziegler Hughes. He was a retired pipefitter and a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. A family man, Mr. Hughes was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening. He was preceded in death by a son, Eddie "Smokey" Hughes. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Cathy (Harrell) Richardson of Holly Hill; sons, George Wilford "Woody" Hughes (Cindy) of Moncks Corner, Wesley Roy Hughes (Angie) of Eutawville, and Patrick Henry Hughes (Hope) of Providence; a sister, Marjorie Hancock of Orangeburg; grandchildren, Joshua Richardson, Harrell Richardson, Jr., Jessica Richardson, Eric Hughes, Chasity Hughes, Joey Hughes, Nicole Marchant, Melissa Hughes, Wes Hughes, Dalton Hughes, and Darla Hughes; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this Wednesday at Avinger Funeral Home and other times at the home of Harrell and Cathy Richardson.
