HOLLY HILL - Furman Edward Shuler, Jr., 81, of the Providence Community, Holly Hill, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen Starr and Rev. Zach Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jim Griffin, Kevin Griffin, Carroll Cheek, Brandon Cheek, Rev. Dave Copeland, David Ott, Mark Ott and Larry Shuler. Honorary pallbearers will members of the Pine Barren Hunting Club and Providence Volunteer Fire Department. Edward was born in the Providence Community, a son of the late Furman Edward Shuler and Hazel Moorer Shuler. A graduate of Providence High School, he was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a farmer, and was a retired Federal Crop Insurance Agent. He was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. Edward was a former member and president of the Holly Hill Jaycees, and an organizer and former chief of the Providence Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the Pine Barren Hunting Club, Ridgeland, SC. Surviving are sisters, Mildred Shuler of the home, Grace Griffin of Providence, and Miriam (Pete) Smoak of Branchville; nephews, Jim (Lou) Griffin of Columbia, Allen (Sandy) Ott, David ( Sherry) Ott, and Mark Ott, all of Branchville; nieces, Brenda (Bobby) Ballard of Elloree, Sharon (Carroll) Cheek of Providence; great-nephew and Godson, Brandon Cheek of Bluffton; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. this Saturday, and other times at the home of Carroll and Sharon Cheek.
