Marian Claire Dantzler Shuler was born on May 23, 1945, in Elloree, South Carolina, to the late Fairey Belle Shuler Dantzler and the late Marion Johnston “Spud” Dantzler.
Claire graduated from Elloree High School in 1963 and entered the Orangeburg Regional Hospital School of Nursing that fall. Upon graduating in 1966, she worked for one year at Orangeburg Regional Hospital before beginning a distinguished 31-year career as a Public Health Nurse with the State of South Carolina (DHEC). She retired in 1998, the same year she welcomed her beloved and only grandson, Chase Adams.
On October 8, 1966, Claire married the love of her life, the late R. Irvin Shuler of the Providence Community in Santee, South Carolina.
Claire was a dedicated and active member of her community. She was a charter member of the Elloree Jaycee-ettes, served as President of the Orangeburg Regional Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, and was an Elder at Santee Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a lay speaker at Jericho United Methodist Church, and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She played an instrumental role in organizing the Manly J.D. Dantzler Chapter of the UDC.
Claire is survived by her loving family: her son, Shannon G. Shuler (Stacy); her daughter, Rhonda Shuler Adams (Greg); her grandson, G. Chase Adams (Hillary); her great-grandson, G. Hunt Adams; her sisters, Virginia Sims Dantzler Ervin and Fairey Belle Dantzler Logan; her brother, Johnston Dantzler (Jo); and her sister-in-law, Rita Y. Shuler.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Island Cemetery in the Providence Community of Santee, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elloree Heritage Museum or Island Cemetery.
