Caroline Rhame McCurry, 88, of Holly Hill, South Carolina, wife of Robert F. (Bob) McCurry of 67 years, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024.
Born on April 12, 1936, in Holly Hill, she was the daughter of the late Caroline Belser Rhame and Irvin H. Rhame. Raised in her beloved Holly Hill, she attended Limestone College and then Columbia College. While in Columbia, she met the love of her life, Bob McCurry of Ware Shoals, South Carolina, whom she married in 1956. When her father Irvin’s health deteriorated, they moved to Holly Hill to assist in the family business in 1961.
Caroline was a devoted member of Holly Hill Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and later sang in the choir. She invariably participated in church dinners and suppers and brought food to those who encountered sickness or death in their families, becoming known for her renowned macaroni and cheese. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they continued to watch church services online and continued keeping up with their wonderful and caring church community. In the mid-1960s, family friends kindled their interest in camping, and the camping bug never left them. Caroline and her husband traveled around the United States in their Airstream camper and were fortunate enough to travel the world together while making many friends along the way. Caroline retired after 28 years of working for the United States Postal Service. Her retirement allowed her to cheer on her beloved Carolina Gamecocks while camping alongside her sister Miriam and brother-in-law David. Caroline loved spending time with her extended family and friends, gardening, attending Carolina football games, and shopping; no one could find a bargain like Caroline. She attended more Holly Hill Academy games, Church events, shows, and football games than one could count. Last but not least, she loved and cherished her family and her loving soul mate the most, always showing her support for each and every one of them. She leaves behind many beloved friends and family members who share wonderful memories.
In addition to her husband, Caroline is survived by her daughter Caroline Lee McCurry Yerich of Lebanon Community, sons, Robert F. (Bob) McCurry, Jr. (Faith) of Orangeburg, Irvin McCurry (Rose) of Holly Hill, Mattison R. McCurry (Beth) of Mt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren, Gordan G. Yerich, Julianna Y. Velarde (Cesar), Grayson L. Yerich, Robert F. McCurry, III (Ashley), Casey M. Weeks (Mason), Marion P. McCurry (Sarah Louise), Margaret M. Colhoun (Bryan), Lucien M. McCurry; five great-grandchildren Cesar and Giovanni Velarde, Nora and James Weeks and Townes McCurry; her sister, Miriam (David) Rhame Medley of Lexington; nieces, Caro (Greg) Robertson and Davii (Jimmy) Parris; and her great nephews. Caroline was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law, Alvin K. Yerich.
