SUMTER - Alice Theresa Turner Norris died on Tuesday, January 19, at Covenant Place in Sumter, SC, where she had resided for the past seven years. The family will receive friends at 1:30 PM, Saturday, January 23, prior to a Celebration of Life service at 2:30 PM at Corinth Baptist Church, 1910 Camden Road, Holly Hill, SC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.Alice was born in Lodge, SC, on October 4, 1923, to The Reverend Robert Patrick Turner and Theresa McDonald Turner. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 51 years, John Edward Norris, Jr.Alice is survived by her four children Mary Nancy Folse (Tom) of Awendaw, SC; Edward Norris (Mary Lu) of Murrells Inlet, SC: Elaine Walters (Don) of St. George, SC; and Helen Hutto-Palka (Thomas) of Sumter, SC. She is loved by her eight grandchildren: Nicole Folse Norris (Clete) of Sumter, SC; Alison Guerard (Thomas) of Fairburn, GA; Patrick Norris (Mandy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Walton Norris (Elizabeth) of Decatur, GA; Elizabeth Butler (Wayne) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; David Walters (Maura) of Brooklyn, NY; Theresa Hutto of Orlando, FL and Andrew Palka of Charleston, SC. Alice's life was further blessed with nine Great-Grandchildren and a special friend, Mr. LeRans Welch of Covenant Place.Daughter of a United Methodist Minister, Alice lived throughout South Carolina in Cottageville, McColl, Greeleyville, Sumter, and Holly Hill. She graduated from Holly Hill High School and finished Winthrop University in 1944, where she served as President of the Student Senate, was elected to Who's Who in Colleges and Universities and earned an BA degree in Journalism. Her first news "beat" was with The Times Democrat in Orangeburg, SC.Later, Alice taught in Holly Hill's middle and high school, served as Director of Guidance at Holly Hill High School until promoted to Director of Guidance in Orangeburg District III Schools. Alice lived at Isle of Palms, SC, for about 15 years and cherished her many friends at Isle of Palms United Methodist Church. She faithfully watched and cheered for her Clemson Tigers for 76 years.In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to Corinth Baptist Church, PO Box 69, Vance, SC 29163 or Target United Methodist Church, PO Box 1303, Holly Hill, SC 29059.
