Sidney Riser

Hubert Sidney Riser Jr. of the Ebenezer Community, Bowman, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2015 at his home.Mr. Riser was born July 23, 1923. He was the son of the late Hubert Sidney Riser Sr. and Julia West Riser. A graduate of Bowman High School, he proudly served in the US Army in England during World War II where he was a mechanic of the B-17 bombers. When he returned home from war, he married Katherine Huff and they were blessed with four children: Elaine (Jimmy) Walters of Lancaster, Jacob (Joy) Riser of Bowman, Shirley (Douglas) Marchant of Harleyville, and Larry (Allison) Riser of Rochester, UK. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Lake Marion, Folly Beach, Cattle Creek and Indian Field Campmeetings. Mr. Riser was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, a member of the Bowman American Legion for 68 years, and a life-long farmer in the Ebenezer community.After the death of his wife Katherine, Mr. Riser married Mildred B. Wamer and gained two wonderful step-children, Marguerite W. Sanders of Camden, SC and Gene (Vanessa) Wamer of St. George. He and Mildred enjoyed their golden years traveling to every state in the continental US.Mr. Riser was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred W. Riser, brothers, Clyde W. Riser and Wilbur W. Riser, and sister, Margaret R. Weathers.Mr. Riser is survived by his children, 13 grandchildren, Lisa (Scott) McManus and Michael (Alison) Walters of Lancaster, Tracy (Bert) Judy of Reevesville, Angie (Andy) Myers of St. George, Frances (Joel ) Derrick of Greer, Jeanie (John) King of St. George, Gregg (Kena) Riser of Bowman, Erica (Scott) Summers of Cameron, Luke Riser and Josh Riser of Rochester UK, Betsy (Chad) Long of Camden, Lisa (Wayne) Huggins of Chapel Hill, NC, and Adam (Catherine) Wamer of North Charleston; 27 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary R. Clayton of Dorchester and Elsie W. Folk of Holly Hill.Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Rev. Marie Ray officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the church cemetery.Visitation will be this Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill and other times at the home.Pallbearers will be his grandsons.The family extends a deep appreciation to Rose Jefferson, Lowandar Montgomery, Gloria Green, and Grove Park Hospice for the wonderful care they provided Mr. Riser.Memorials may be made to Ebenezer UMC Cemetery Fund, 1876 Ebenezer Rd., Bowman, SC 29018.
