Liz Sweat

VANCE - Ruth Elizabeth "Liz" Sweat, 89, of Vance, widow of Charles W. "Bert" Sweat, Sr., went to be with her Lord Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Gerizim United Methodist Church in Vance with Revs. Ed Stiltz and Rev. Barry Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Sweat was born in Cross, a daughter of the late George C. Scott and Ruth Garrett Scott. She and her late husband owned and operated Sweat's Grocery for many years. "Liz" as she was fondly known by family and friends worked as a waitress for many years at several restaurants in Santee until her retirement in 1986 from the Holiday Inn in Santee. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother who cherished her family. Surviving are children, Charles W. Sweat, Jr. of Vance, Cynthia S. Myers of Vance, and Annie S. Knight (Rudy) of Lebanon; a sister, Lola Mae Sanders of Ridge Spring; grandchildren, Michael Knight of Lebanon, Donna K. Nelson (Ed) of San Antonio, Tex., Yolanda M. Williams (Tommy) of Hardeeville, Evonne M. Preston (Ron) of Maryland, and Melissa S. Stalo (Matthew) of Sarasota, Fla.; 13 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill.
