John Harkins

RIDGEVILLE - John Henry Harkins, 70, of the Sandridge Community, husband of Linda Singletary Harkins, died Sunday, September 7, 2014 in a North Charleston hospital. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Sandridge First Baptist Church, 4677 State Road, Ridgeville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill. John, a native of the Sandridge Community, was a son of the late Henry Grady Harkins and Marjorie Edgemon Harkins. He was a graduate of Cross High School, and was a retired lieutenant from MacDougall Correctional Institution. He was a very active member of Sandridge First Baptist Church, the Sandridge Community, and was a member of the Sandridge Volunteer Fire Department. John was preceded in death by a grandson, Christian Poston. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Karen (Mike) Poston, and a son, Kevin (Pam) Harkins, all of Sandridge; sisters, Margie (Bill) Wheeler of Summerville, and Faye (David) Brownlee of Goose Creek; brothers, Bill (Wendy) Harkins of Athens, Ga., Steve (LeMay) Harkins of Summerville; and Ronnie (Marianne) Harkins of Buffalo, NY; mother-in-law, Annie Lee Singletary of Sandridge; grandchildren, Amanda (Patrick) Callahan of Ladson, Gary Poston of Sandridge, Lyndsay Poston of Holly Hill, Christopher (Michelle) Peagler of Vance, Crystal Harkins of Sandridge; great-grandchildren, Casen Mobley and Landon Callahan.
