James E. Morris

VANCE - Mr. James Ervin Morris, 84, of Vance, died Monday, August 20, 2012 at his home after several years of declining health. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Santee Presbyterian Church with Mr. Joe Collins, Rev. Jack Gibson and Rev. Ron Patton officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at 3:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens, 2648 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Graniteville, SC. Mr. Morris was born in the Sardinia community of Clarendon County on June 5, 1928. He was the son of the late Daniel Elias and Martha Olive "Mattie" Hodge Morris. He grew up in Oswego, SC, and was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, graduating from Sumter high School. An Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Morris was a Master Sergeant in the 65th Combat Engineer Division, and received a special citation from the President of the Republic of South Korea for his service there. Mr. Morris was an avid baseball player, having played on his high school team and on the American Legion team in Sumter. After he returned from his time in the military he went to work for Sears and played baseball on the Industrial League for Sears. Mr. Morris relocated to Aiken, SC where he attended USC Aiken Campus. He was employed by E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant as a chemical supervisor, and was employed there for 32 years. After his retirement, he relocated to the Santee area where he enjoyed many years of fishing and boating on Lake Marion. Mr. Morris was a member of Santee Presbyterian Church for many years where he served as an usher, greeter, and on the finance committee. He was always a dedicated member and was truly a great Christian gentleman. Mr. Morris was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanette "Jean" Morris Evans and Julia Morris Griffin; and three brothers, Horace, Douglas, and Cecil Morris. He was first married to the late Margaret Plumley Morris. Surviving from this union are five step-children, Charles (Patty) Plumley of Montmorenci, SC, Raymond D. (Debra) Plumley of Gaston, SC, Betty Fitzgerald (Curtis) of Goose Creek, SC, Thelma "Terry" Carter of Columbia, and Louise "Beth" Kestler of West Columbia; and many grands and great-grands. Mr. Morris is survived by his second wife, Rose Stroman-Morris of the home; by this union he is survived by three step-children, Michael E. Stroman (Faye) of Greenville, SC, Pamela Kemmerlin (Roger) of Eutawville, SC, and Beverly Stroman of Santee, SC. Even though he had no biological children, he truly loved all the children and grandchildren, as well as all the many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Avinger Funeral Home, Holly Hill, from 5 to 7 p.m. this Tuesday evening, and other times at the residence, 384 Suwanee Drive, Vance, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Santee Presbyterian Church, PO Box 649, Santee, SC 29142; or North United Methodist Church, PO Box 306, North, SC 29112; or to a charity of one's choice. Mr. Morris' family would like to thank everyone for all the love and kindness shown to them during his sickness and passing.
