Harry Shuler

SANTEE - Harry Shingler Shuler, Jr.,86, husband of Esther S. Shuler died on Monday, May 14, 2012 at his home in Santee. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jerusalem United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry Fleming officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charlie Walker, Edward Shuler, Calvin Strock, Jason Strock, and Brian Hooks, and Guy Miller. Mr. Shuler was born December 2, 1925 in Elloree, a son of the late Harry Shingler Shuler, Sr. and Helen Stack Shuler. He graduated from Porter Military Academy and attended The University of South Carolina, and was a veteran of the Merchant Marines serving on the hospital ship "Acadia" during World War II. Mr. Shuler was the retired owner and operator of H.S. Oil Company, Inc., owner of Elloree Department Store, owner and operator with his father of a Chevrolet dealership and Massey Ferguson dealership, and founder of SC Oil Company, DBA Santee General Store. He was a member of Jerusalem UMC, a member of the Elks club, and was a former Jaycee. He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Helen Douglas Stack. Surviving in addition to his wife Esther; are two sisters, Celia (Jim) Ulmer of Mt. Pleasant, and Carol Walker of Hilton Head; one brother, Bobby (Gerry) Shuler of Orangeburg; three children, Marian (Dal) Goforth of Blackville, Inger (Nelson) Walker of Manning, and Ed Shuler (Shirley Toth) of Santee; and five grandchildren, Amanda Crosby, Cory Goforth, Edward Shuler, Alexandria Walker, and Charlie Walker. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers: Deb Cila, Terry Stack, Willa Mae Capers, Margaret Green, and Naomi Wigfall. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this Tuesday evening at Avinger Funeral Home, Holly Hill. For those coming from the Santee/Elloree area please use US Hwy. 15 to US Hwy. 176 to Holly Hill to avoid detour on SC Hwy. 310. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jerusalem UMC, PO Box 366, Elloree, SC 29047 or Grove Park Hospice,PO Box 701, Orangeburg, SC 29116.
