Alva R. Mims

July 31, 1927 — December 22, 2016

CHARLESTON - Alva Ray Mims, 89, husband of Christine Fraser Mims, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at his home. A memorial service will be 12 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2016 at St. Mark United Methodist Church, 413 Geddes Ave., Charleston, SC 29407. Burial will be later in Sandridge First Baptist Church Cemetery, Sandridge Community, Ridgeville. The family will receive friends one hour prior the service at the church. Alva was born in Charleston, a son of the late Alva S. Mims and Anna Bell Singletary. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Merchant Marines. Alva was retired from Sears and was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, Christine "Chris" Mims, he is survived by a son, Dr. Alexander (Sandy) Logan of Longs; daughters, Phyllis Ann Haynie of Charleston, and Cathy Holland of Johns Island; grandchildren, Tara (Jeremy) Bradley of Miss., Veronica (Neal) Ard of Del., and Anthony Smith of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Bryce and Braxton Bradly of Miss. and Liam Ard of Del.; and caregivers, Darrell Heyward and Lory Simmions. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children's Home, PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250, or St. Mark UMC, 413 Geddes Ave., Charleston, SC 29407.
