Avinger Funeral Home is the successor to Sauls-Rhame Funeral Home which
succeeded Bennett Funeral Home. Bennett Funeral Home was started through the
extension of services that Bennett Hardware had been providing for years.
Mr. Cameron Sauls was hired because Mr. Bennett needed a licensed embalmer to
handle the contract Bennett had with the WPA. The WPA project was to flood the
Santee River in order to create what is now Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie. Mr.
Bennett was awarded the contract to handle the remains of anyone that perished
during the project.
Sauls-Rhame Funeral Home was a continuation of the Bennett Funeral Home. Mr.
Sauls and two partners, I.H. Rhame and his brother, R.W. Rhame bought out Mr.
Bennett. They operated the funeral home for a number of years until E. W.
"Buddy" Avinger bought them out.
Mr. Avinger started with Sauls-Rhame in April of 1960 and changed the name to
Avinger Funeral Home in 1983 when he moved into the brand new facility on Eutaw
Road. Today, we are committed to the long standing reputation of solid,
dependable service that has been our hallmark through the years.
